A close friend (male) of my daughter, who is only a sophomore in high school, has been staying with friends because neither of his parents want him. How can I help him understand how much God loves him?

Thank you for contacting us. I have three suggestions for you...

1) Demonstrate God's love to this young man. God has brought him into your world - and has given you a concern for him - so show him how much God loves him by loving him. Remember the Scripture says, "Let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth." (1 John 3:18)

2) Help this young man find and plug into a Christian support system: a loving community of believers who together can demonstrate God's love on an ongoing basis. A youth group, for example, can be a great way to expose a teenager to the love of God.

3) Tell Him about God's love. Sharing the Good News of what Jesus has done for us would seem to be a great story to tell. And, there are plenty of other Scriptures which speak about God's love. Here are some, for example:

Psalm 27:10 - specifically in this situation - which says, "Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” (New Living Translation)

  • Psalm 68:5
  • Psalm 103:13
  • Psalm 145:8-9
  • Psalm 145:13-14
  • Matthew 10:30-31
  • Psalm 86:5
  • 1 John 3:1
