Beyond Special: A distinctly Christian school for those with learning challenges

Written by:

Janet Roper is into miracles these days, which may not be a difficulty since she’s surrounded by angels—the earthly variety.  Twenty-six special students comprised the student body the past year at a unique school for those with learning differences.

“Send me a sign an idiot wouldn’t miss.” That’s one of Roper’s favorite prayers as Executive Director of Achievers’ Center for Education, named ACE for short—symbolic too, since the school helps students gain a needed advantage. Signs and wonders are sometimes on the short list of needs though.

In the Bible, Nehemiah was inspired by God to rebuild the ruined city of Jerusalem. Known as a man of action and prayer, Nehemiah successfully reclaimed the land for the Lord.

Last year a local group followed in the footsteps of their Biblical hero. Members of The Nehemiah Initiative were led by God to reclaim and rebuild an area on San Antonio’s Westside through prayer and action.

A steering committee of 6 members of a Southside pastors and leaders fellowship led by Berta and Rune Brannstrom was inspired by the effectiveness of prayer on the crime rate in Newark, N.J.

Men of Light Conference is set for June 19th

But alluring distractions abound, and kingdom people find themselves compromised, or confused, in need of reminders about their destination. Walk in the light by having fellowship with one another says 1 John 1:7. Many great churches in San Antonio offer such opportunity, and bringing the body of Christ together can yield a potent mix of inspiration.

Small Town Boy Changes the Big City.

On a mild spring morning recently, a young boy rose long before dawn to get to Texas Stadium in Irving. Many thousands of spectators also made their way through the metro-Dallas darkness to see the implosion of the former home of the Dallas Cowboys. They would vie for parking spaces reserved for the 7 a.m. event. But eleven-year-old Casey Rogers of Terrell (southeast of Dallas) wouldn’t need one.
